Brief History of the Department

The Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management was inherited from the then University of Science and Technology, Ifaki in 2016.  The Department was domiciled in the Department of Geography and Planning Science at inception as an option in the award of B.Sc. Degree Tourism and Hospitality Management.  But in 2017, there was a verification programme that made the Department to become full fledge Department.

Philosophy of the Department

The philosophy under pinning the B.Sc. Degree Programme in Tourism and Hospitality Management is to produce a crop of graduate equipped with appropriate knowledge skill, concepts and techniques to make their contributions to the development of Nigeria, Africa and globally in the various sub fields of Tourism and Hospitality.

The course is built around a central theme of tourism, recreation, leisure pursuits and hospitality Managements principles doctrines, theories, behaviours, beliefs and practices.  It involves the chance to study and manage tourism facilities for organizations or for one self.  Likewise, it entails how to learn the day today spatial and spatial processes, system and patterns used to plan and manage environmental resources at the local, National and international levels to attain recreation, tourism and hospitality sustainable growth and goals.

To be successful, a student needs a route of knowledge and skills.  After graduating from the university, he/she is expected to have acquired the skills and knowledge with comprehensive formal and other forms of education in the study and preparation of polices and activities in the tourism sectors.

Objectives of the Department

  1. Impart into students a sound scientific knowledge of Tourism and Hospitality Management studies, an appreciation of its application in different socio-cultural contexts and to involve the students in intellectually stimulating, convivial and satisfying experiences in learning and studying.
  2. Provide student with a broad and well balanced knowledge in the concept,   principles, theories and methods or techniques in Tourism and Hospitality Management.
  3. Provide students with relevant knowledge and skill from which they can proceed to either further their studies or setup enterprises in specialized areas Tourism and Hospitality Management.
  4. Instill in student and appreciation of the importance of Tourism and   Hospitality Management in contemporary national and global affairs.
  5. Develop in students a range of opportunities in employment whether public, private or self-employment as related to the knowledge in Tourism and Hospitality Management they have acquired.
  6. Develop in the student’s ability that will enable them manage hotel, resorts, tourism centres, recreation sport facilities travel agencies and other related organizations.
  7. Equip the students to be able to offer professional advice and consultancy services in the broad and specific areas of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

General services and Academic Programme

Admission Requirements

A. Four Year Programme

  1. Candidates seeking admission into the four years programme must have obtained credit passes in five subject of the ‘O’ level/Senior Secondary School Certificates (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB or GCE) at not more than two sitting.
  2. Such credit passes must include English language, Mathematics and any other two from Sciences, Social Sciences or Arts and any other are subject. Subjects can be drawn from Geography, Economics, Foods & Nutrition, Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Health Sciences, Commerce Agricultural Sciences, Accounting, Home-Economics, Government, History, French, Woodwork, Fine Arts and Technical Drawing.
  3. Candidate must take at the UTME, English language and any other three subjects from Sciences, Social Sciences or Arts.

B.  Three Years Direct Entry Programme

In addition to the requirements stated above;

  1. Candidate must have passed at least two sciences, Social Sciences or Art subject at the NCE, HSC or GCE (A) Levels, National Diploma in Town Planning, Environmental Management, Tourism Studies and Development, Business Studies, Hotel and Catering Management, Social Works, Environmental Health Technology, Fisheries and Wildlife, Eco-tourism, Public Administration or related subject acceptable to the Department.
