Brief History of the Department of Sociology

The Department was created at the inception of the University in 1982 with the admission of 19 students and academic staff which included Prof. I.O. A. Adelola, Y.K. Sanusi and Mr. (Now Prof.) L.A. Adesina, Prof. E.O. Akeredolu-Ale was instrumental to the formulation of the academic programme through the recruitment of NISER scholars for the University.  The current Head of Department is Dr. Oluyemo Catherine Ajoke.

 

The Department was instrumental to the creation of the Centre for Research and Development (CRD) in November, 1991 to attract and promote Research, Consultancy and Policy Development.  This later resulted in the University receipt of a grant from the Swedish Agency for Research Co-operation (SAREC) in a project on Sexual Behaviours and Sexually Transmitted Diseases in Nigeria.

 

The Centre also co-ordinated other West African research groups.  The Department, as part of its academic productivity profile, has successfully graduated several Ph.D. candidates in the past ten years, one of whom is already a Professor in the Department.

The Philosophy

The philosophy of the Department is derived from the philosophy of the University which is set to achieve effective application of higher education.  The Department is devoted to integrating theories of Sociology and Social Anthropology and evaluate their applications to the solution of societal problems.  The Department provides high standard educational programmes through lectures, seminars, tests and original essays that cut across the spectrum of the Social Sciences towards turning out students into articulate and skilled professionals.

The Objectives

The general objective of the Department is to produce graduates in the discipline of Social and Social Anthropology  who are capable of making important contributions to national development and the growth of the discipline in teaching and as a profession. 

The specific objectives include:                         

 

  1. Equip our graduates with sound and relevant knowledge of Sociology that would prepare them to appraise and cope with challenges in a developing nation like Nigeria and to contribute effectively to its overall development.

 

  1. Instill in our graduates the ability to apply basic Sociological theories and research methods with learning experience that could lead to the acquiring of the skills and principles in the various spheres of the Social Sciences.

 

  1. Create in the students a wider consciousness towards the African society in general and Nigerian in particular.

 

  1. Develop in our graduates’ useful manpower competencies in public, private, Global or entrepreneurship life, and

 

  1. Equip our graduates with the skills required for further studies in any desire specialization of Sociology.
