The Department was instrumental to the creation Centre for Research and Development (OSUA/SAREC) in November, 1991 to attract and promote Research, Consultancy and Policy Development to the University.  This later resulted in the University receipt of a grant from the Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation (SAREC) to facilitate the study of Sexual Networking and the HIV/AIDS Epidemic.  The Centre coordinated other West African research groups in this regard.

The Department, as part of its academic productivity profile, has successfully graduated several Postgraduate candidates, some of whom are Professors and Lecturers not only in the department but across other universities in Nigeria and abroad. Three of them are professors in the department. The department developed the academic content of the Centre for Gender and Development Studies (CGDS) in the University and the Centre has successfully metamorphosised into a full Faculty.
